Congressional Internship

Immigration Policy Intern, HIAS, Washington DC

Founded in 1881, HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), the international migration agency of the American Jewish community, is the oldest international migration and refugee resettlement agency in the United States. Dedicated to assisting persecuted and oppressed Jews and other people worldwide and delivering them to countries of safe haven, to date HIAS has assisted more than 4.5 million people.

Position: Immigration Policy Intern, HIAS, Washington DC

Internship Description:
The Immigration Policy Intern will work with HIAS’ Policy Department in its Washington, DC office on efforts to advocate for generous and just immigration and refugee policies. Successful candidates will have a strong interest in government affairs and the role of faith-based advocacy.

Responsibilities:
· Conduct research, analysis, and writing for various special projects related to immigration, refugee, and asylum policy, advocacy, and programs in support of HIAS’ U.S. and international programs.
· Monitor and report on congressional hearings, legislative affairs, and new stories of interest to HIAS.
· Assist with regular publications such as the HIAS/JTA Digest, the Middle East Refugee Digest, the Latin America Refugee Digest, and the Haitian Immigration Digest.
· Assist with the development and implementation of events for HIAS Young Leaders.
· Other duties related to program development, management, operations, grassroots outreach, database upkeep, grants, and general office support.
Requirements:
· Undergraduate or graduate student. (Projects created and assigned based upon educational experience and knowledge.)
· Experience with immigration, refugees, and/or policy preferred
· Strong research, analytical, and writing skills
· Ability to prioritize, multi-task between administrative and programmatic issues, and manage time effectively
· Excellent inter-personal skills, ability to work independently, and strong organizational skills
· Fluency in written and spoken English; bilingual a plus but not required
· Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word & Excel) and internet research.
· Commitment of at least 15 hours/week during the semester; commitment of at least 25 hours/week during the summer.

Department of Commerce Internship

The Department of Commerce (DOC) will have internships available during the Fall 2010 Session in its Internship for Postsecondary Students Program *. Internships will be in the Washington, D.C metro area. Selected applicants will intern for 15 weeks beginning as early as 30 August 2010 or as late as 13 September 2010. Internships require either part time (20 hours per week) or full time (40 hours per week). These internships offer opportunities to participants for hands-on education and training related to their fields of interest and those of the DOC.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) manages the Internships for Postsecondary Students. Applications will be accepted through 20 August 2010.

Disciplines of Interest:
Examples include the following: business; economics; statistics; international relations; communications and graphic design; computer science; physical sciences; mathematics; and life, health, and medical sciences.

Benefits:
Undergraduate interns receive a weekly stipend of $500; graduate interns receive $600. In addition, both undergraduate and graduate interns receive a $150 weekly housing allowance, plus limited travel reimbursement and accidental medical expense coverage.

Description
Interns will work in a fast-paced Congressional Office, gaining valuable experience and knowledge of the United States Congress. Unique opportunity to learn the particular role and responsibilities of the U.S. House Majority Leader in Congress. Interns will gain practical experience while assisting personal office staff, and have the opportunity to acquire a working knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the Legislative branch. Intern responsibilities include greeting constituents, handling constituent phone calls, assisting staff with administrative tasks, conducting legislative research, and assisting with correspondence. Opportunities to attend Capitol Hill briefings, congressional hearings, receptions, and press events.

Qualifications
Interns must be sharp, have good interpersonal skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills. Successful interns will be able to find information with little assistance, be observant and self-aware, require minimal supervision, and be able to both work independently and coordinate with others as necessary. Applicants should have working knowledge of current events and policy topics, as well as a willingness to do mundane tasks as needed, as well as have an interest in public service or government. Strong attention to detail and instructions a must. Fifth district residency a plus.

Requirements

College-level students or recent college graduates. Ability to commit at least two full days a week, 9-6pm from August to December. Proficiency in MS Office.
