"Can what you eat endanger the orangutan's rainforest home?"
Environmental Policy Roundtable
Friday, November 12, 2010, Room 1113 Van Munching Hall, 12:15 - 1:30pm
In honor of Orangutan Awareness Week, Amy Clanin will join us to give a presentation on orangutans and the leading threat to their survival: the expansion of oil-palm plantations. The discussion will examine the plight of the orangutan and how companies are linked to destroying their rainforest home. The orangutan could become the first great ape species to go extinct if urgent action isn’t taken. To halt the slide toward extinction, conservationists, governments, oil-palm growers, buyers, consumers, and other stakeholders are uniting to develop strategies in an attempt to preserve the apes’ habitat. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to learn how you can be a more responsible consumer and save the orangutans.
Amy has a strong passion for and background in primatology. She holds degrees in Primate Behavior and Ecology and Anthropology and has experience working on great ape projects in Uganda, Borneo, and Senegal. She is currently a program manager with a non-profit organization, whose mission is to protect bonobos and their rainforest habitat in the heart of the Congo.
