Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD)
Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) is currently recruiting interns for our Spring ’11 semester internship program. We are looking for some motivated and dedicated juniors, seniors and grad students with an interest in international affairs, security studies, communication, Middle Eastern studies and/or politics.
Attached is FDD’s newest internship posting for the Spring semester of 2011. We are offering a number of internships in our Research, Communications and Development Departments. FDD is a non-profit, nonpartisan institute founded just after 9/11 that focuses exclusively on terrorism research and education and counterterrorism efforts. We are located right in downtown DC near three major metro stops. We are very flexible with scheduling and are happy to assist students looking to earn academic credit for the semester.
I would be very grateful if you could circulate this posting to any of your students who might be looking for this type of internship program. It would also be great if you could include our internship posting in any listserv you may have. Feel free to pass this notice along to other interested program directors as well.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions by email at Katie@DefendDemocracy.org or by calling (202) 207-0190. I look forward to working with your students!
Many thanks,
Katie Ake

FDD Internship Opportunities
The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) is a nonpartisan policy institute dedicated exclusively to promoting pluralism, defending democratic values, and fighting the ideologies that threaten democracy. The organization was founded shortly after 9/11 by a group of visionary philanthropists and policymakers to engage in the worldwide war of ideas and to support the defense of democratic societies under assault by terrorism and militant Islamism. FDD combines policy research, investigative journalism, strategic communications, and democracy and counterterrorism education.
About FDD’s Internship Program
Based in downtown Washington, D.C., the Foundation for Defense of Democracies has a number of internship opportunities available in three different departments. All FDD interns will have the opportunity to participate in a twice-monthly speaker series, which brings high-level DC officials to engage with interns in an intimate setting. FDD interns will be encouraged to build on their academic skills by working closely with senior staff. FDD is glad to offer academic credit for this internship.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

The Hatcher Group
The Hatcher Group, a 10-year-old communications headquartered in Bethesda that works solely with nonprofits on progressive policy issues aimed at bringing about social change. We are in the process of hiring one or two interns, and I wanted to reach out to see if you had any candidates we should consider.
In general, we are looking for interns who are smart and outgoing, write well, work well in teams, have an interest in the subject areas in which we work and possess at least minimal social media skills. One of the interns we hire will be working with our education team, so experience – or at least a strong interest – in that topic would be a big plus. Advanced social media skills would also be a plus.
We are willing to be flexible on when our new interns start and how many hours they work each week. We are ready to hire now, but if we find the right candidate and they cannot start immediately we could wait. Ideally we would like someone who could work five days per week but are open to considering someone who can work only half-time. We are open to hiring students or recent graduates, including those finishing up in December. The job pays $10 per hour. Normally our internships last four months but they can be extended if the situation warrants.
Our office is a three-block walk from the Bethesda stop on Metro’s Red Line; we are about a 30-minute drive from College Park depending on traffic.
I look forward to hearing from you. By the way, I graduated from Maryland in 1979 and joined The Hatcher Group two years ago after a long career in journalism. I currently teach an introductory journalism class at the university’s Merrill College of Journalism. I can attest that The Hatcher Group is a very good and supportive place to work and learn. Washingtonian magazine recently named us one of the region’s “great places to work.” Go Terps!!
To apply: Send an email with a resume and a cover letter explaining why you are interested in working for us and how you believe your skills match what we are looking for (as I set out in paragraph 2 ).
